Let's be real: Cybersecurity awareness rarely cracks the top 10 on most people's priority list. Despite daily tales of hacks, scams, and fraud, our training tools often gathered dust. 

We tried; from the ultra-technical to the light-hearted animations, but both missed the mark. Then came our third attempt to create cybersecurity training that not only grabs attention but sticks.

In the heart of our organization, something was brewing – frustration. And it was not just us. Owners and managers of our customer companies echoed the same sentiment, their exasperation evident in every conversation. They had entrusted us with the responsibility of equipping their teams, but despite our best efforts, the training modules often remained untouched, gathering digital cobwebs.  

We understood the dilemma: everyone's schedule was packed, inboxes were overflowing, and calendars booked solid. But this was not just another memo. We all know that Cybersecurity awareness is essential armor for the digital age. Think of it this way: imagine investing in an impeccable security system for your home, but consistently leaving the front door ajar. 

That is what we faced daily. Our techs were setting up robust firewalls updating antivirus software and implementing top-tier security measures. Yet, without user participation, these defenses were compromised, much like fortress walls with gaping entrances. We watched in dismay as, despite the state-of-the-art digital protections in place, it was the human element that became the unpredictable variable. 

Our shared frustration became the catalyst. We recognized that change was imperative, and it was not solely about advancing the technology—it was about reimagining the approach – completely! As part of our reimagination, we realized that a foundational shift was necessary. Before diving into training, it was vital that company owners and managers truly grasped the weight of what was at stake. Enter the Written Information Security Plan (WISP). This was not just a document; it was a roadmap, a calling.

By outlining precisely what needed protection—from proprietary company data to customers' personally identifiable information—the WISP provided a tangible, in-depth view of the digital assets at risk. Having this plan in hand did more than just educate—it galvanized. Leaders could visually map out the web of responsibilities, understanding that every node, every employee, played a critical role. 

The real value of the WISP was in its ripple effect: it was not about comprehension, but about motivation. Company leaders, with the gravity of their responsibility, made clear became the frontline advocates, ensuring that every team member not only knew their cybersecurity role but was actively engaged in fulfilling it. This is why for some industries a WISP is a legal requirement.

A recent study IBM performed found that without human error 19 out of 20 breaches analyzed in the study would have never happened. Without proper skills or decision-making criteria, employees will not know how to protect you when a cyberthreat inevitably presents itself to them. Investing in training is a wise investment. It is inexpensive and has a significant impact. Cybercriminals only must be right once; you and your employees must be right 100% of the time!
